Behind the Scenes: Making Elf on the Metal Shelf - 24 Episode Christmas Special 2024.
In December 2024, I decided to take on a slightly ridiculous, very festive challenge: creating 24 stop-motion Christmas episodes of "Elf on the Metal Shelf." I didn’t totally realise what I was getting myself into, but by the end of the month, I’d become a one-person film crew, prop master, set designer, animator, and editor.
Here’s what really went into making it all happen.
• Planning the Chaos. Before I could film anything, I had to come up with ideas for every single episode - 24 of them. That meant writing down quick storylines, figuring out what props I needed, deciding how the elf should move, and making sure each episode had its own little twist. It was basically creative chaos on a spreadsheet. • Setting Up the Scenes. Every episode needed its own setup, which meant a lot of cleaning, rearranging products in the background of scenes. I’d set the elf in place, adjust settings on my phone, move the elf slightly, and try not to move anything else in the scene. Setting up and filming the scene took way longer than I thought. • Stop-Motion: AKA The Patience Olympics. Stop-motion sounds magical until you’re the one moving an elf’s arm 1 cm at a time. Each episode required dozens (sometimes hundreds) of photos to make the motion smooth. This was my first attempt at stop-motion. Take photo. Move elf. Take photo. Move elf again. Repeat until your back hurts. The camera couldn’t budge. And if anything shifted by accident, I’d have to redo shots. Stop-motion is equal parts creativity and “don’t breathe too hard.” • Editing the Madness. Once I had all the photos, the digital work began. This meant: • sorting through the mountain of shots, • stitching everything together, • fixing mistakes, • adding music and sound effects, • and praying the final animation looked intentional. Editing took just as much effort as filming, but it was also where the episodes finally came to life, and I was buzzing! • The Time Commitment. (aka… a lot more than you ever thought) Doing this every single day for 24 days was no joke. Each episode took hours, from setting up, to shooting, to editing, to posting. It became a daily routine: coffee, make stop-motion, clean up the chaos, repeat tomorrow. But honestly? It was well worth it. I loved it! • Looking Back. Creating 24 Christmas episodes in just over a month taught me so much about storytelling, animation, photography, and just plain perseverance. It was exhausting, but also genuinely fun to watch the elf scenes turn into something magical. • Would I do it again? Absolutely! Unfortunately this month I have too much going on to film another this year... maybe next year?
A Curious Arrival at ASC Metals, Special delivery!... Don't open till 1st December?
This morning, a peculiar delivery arrived at ASC Metals. It was simply left in our front foyer, a plain package with one clear instruction: "Don't open until 1st December." Initially, I thought little of it and placed it safely on the shelf. But when I went back to check... it was gone. Was it a dream? 😴 Or is something exciting in store? Today, a surprise guest showed up - an elf with a passion for all things metal! 🧝♂️ Known for their craftsmanship in the North Pole, elf was impressed by our extensive metal stock range of sheets, sections and plates. "This is craftsmanship at its finest," elf remarked while admiring our polished sheets. We might even have inspired some upgrades for Santa’s sleigh this year! 🎅 At ASC Metals, we’re proud to provide exceptional products that stand out - whether for everyday projects or magical journeys.

Could this be a pre-check for Santa? 🎅 Or just an elf looking for the perfect metal for a new sleigh upgrade?

Looks like our holiday elf decided to start their first shift early! Sneaking across the office floor, scaling a tower of toilet roll, and even attempting to sign in at reception, it seems like someone’s eager to join the ASC team! 😂🎄 We’re not sure if they meet all the qualifications, but they definitely brought some holiday spirit to work! ✨ Have you seen our little visitor causing mischief? There can be only one!.. Fallen Angel? 👼
An ambitious elf was caught scaling our Christmas tree, determined to overthrow the angel's top spot. 👀👼 "Only room for one star on this tree!" the elf allegedly shouted as climbing up. Witnesses report a daring battle for tree-top supremacy, complete with glitter bombs and a very questionable use of tinsel. 🎁💥 Who do YOU think deserves the crown this year — Team Angel 👼 or Team Elf? 🧝

Our resident elf has been spotted on a refreshment quest. 🍹 Spotted darting between the desks, sipping on their favourite drink, "Elf Up" and eyeing the candy jar like it’s the North Pole’s secret treasure. 🍬🍫 Stay tuned, – rumour has it elf's planning a sugar-fueled productivity spree! 🧝♂️⚡️ Keep an eye out—who knows where elf will pop up next! 👀✨

Humans call it a 'photocopier,' but I know better. The hum, the lights, the magic paper portal it spits out, it’s GOT to be a way back to the North Pole! So, elf climbed up, hit the glowing button… and BAM! Instead of home, a Top Secret Mission appeared: ❄️ URGENT ELF TASK ❄️ Santa’s sleigh is out of commission! We need METAL—strong enough to hold a billion presents and withstand reindeer turbulence. Your mission: Find the metal, or Christmas is DOOMED. 🎅🚨 ...Guess I’m not going home just yet. Now, to find metal. Hmm, where do humans keep their shiny stuff? Vending machines? Tinfoil hats? 🤔 Wish me luck, friends. The fate of Christmas rests on my tiny shoulders. 🎁✨

This elf is on a TOP-SECRET MISSION from Santa himself! ELF has infiltrated the warehouse. Apparently, the sleigh broke down (breakdown services not currently available at the north pole), and the big guy sent this tiny engineer to scavenge for spare parts. So far, we’ve seen the elf looking at our large diameter aluminium round bars, maybe making some big alloy wheels for the sleigh? 🤷♀️ Pretty sure elf thinks everything is sleigh-compatible at this point. The question is: will our little festive mechanic find the parts needed? Or will we soon find out that Santa’s sleigh is now powered by duct tape, and bubble wrap? In the spirit of Christmas (and to avoid becoming the reason presents don’t make it this year), let’s help this tiny holiday hero. Stay tuned for updates, and remember: Christmas depends on this elf. This morning, we caught elf leaping, flipping, and sliding across our aluminium round bars in search of something very special: Parts to repair Santa’s sleigh! 🎅 Apparently, a bumpy landing in the North Pole left Santa’s ride in need of urgent repairs. With Christmas Eve fast approaching, this nimble elf knew exactly where to go - our warehouse, packed with metal products that can withstand even the chilliest, fastest sleigh rides. This morning, our beloved elf, attempted a daring climb up our aluminium round bar, determined to find those sleigh parts Santa needs. Agile and full of holiday spirit, elf ascended with confidence, but disaster struck at the very top. A misplaced step led to a dramatic slip, and poor elf endured a harrowing fall. The impact was - well, let’s just say on the jingles! before tumbling to the ground unconscious. 😲 The workshop at the North Pole looked on in despair. "Is Christmas cancelled?" one of the elves asks Santa. "Of course not!" Santa replied then begins pacing the floor. Could this misstep derail Christmas cheer? Will elf make a speedy recovery for the next episode?... 😭

Fueled by festive chaos, this daring elf decided to scale the coating machine (this elf can't stop climbing stuff!), spinning round and around like a holiday merry-go-round. 🎢 Now dizzy and confused, elf landed smack onto a moving sheet of aluminium. Now the elf is sliding-helpless-toward the rollers! 😱 Will elf make it out in time?... Will Christmas be saved? Or is this the year Santa has to call for backup? One thing’s for sure: the North Pole never has a dull moment with this elf!

So far, elf's locked in aluminium and stainless steel, the perfect combo to make Santa’s sleigh lighter, faster, and tougher to travel the globe in one night. 🌍 🎄🎁🎁 But the job’s not done yet! Tasked with sourcing materials for Santa's sleigh repair, elf spotted something much more exciting - a shiny new forklift truck. Naturally, the temptation was too great. Before anyone could say “North Pole safety protocols,” elf was zipping around the warehouse like it’s the last lap at the reindeer tryouts and late for the sleigh shift. 🛷 🎅 While elf’s joyride added some unplanned festive flair to our operations, it reminded us of two things: 1️⃣ Even the most focused mission can benefit from a little spontaneity (though perhaps not in a forklift). 2️⃣ It’s important to have a team that supports each other, even when someone takes the scenic route to success.

Our security cameras recently picked up some unusual activity at our loading bay. Our holiday guest was spotted dragging a bag toward one of our trucks. After a bit of struggling… BAM! A little elf magic sent everything flying on it's way. ✨🎩 While we’d love to have a magical workforce to lighten the load during the holiday rush, rest assured, we don’t load our vehicles like this. 😂 Our cameras confirm it: no shortcuts, no elf antics - just careful, professional handling every time. 👍 At ASC Metals, we take every care to ensure your items are loaded securely and transported safely. We’re not sure what’s more impressive: the elf’s perfect ratchet strap throw technique or the truck product placement. For the past few weeks, elf a tireless, humble, and deeply talented member of Santa’s elite workshop team has called ASC Metals home. Armed with nothing but determination and a sparkling eye for perfection, elf has been meticulously scouring metals to repair Santa’s legendary sleigh. The one that carries dreams across the globe, powered by hope and joy. And thanks to elf’s dedication, every plate is polished and the runners are now stronger than ever! 🦾 But this morning, the mission is complete. And now, it’s time for elf to leave. As elf dusted the clothes down once more, paused one last time by the now-quiet warehouse floor, there was a heaviness in the air. This wasn’t just work - it was a calling, a purpose. And now, it’s over. Elf’s footprints fade in the metal swarf chippings left on the floor, and although elf will always be apart of our ASC Metals family, the space left behind feels... bigger. Quieter. Sadder. To Elf: You’ve reminded us all of the power of dedication, heart, and a little holiday magic. Thank you for everything. Safe travels home.
